Vintage Photographs on the Pittsburgh Rivers.

L.T.Peterson & P. S. Newman clean their boat, "Jollo", before a Sunday Cruise on the Allegheny River. The boat is a late 1940s Ventnor Runabout. It appears that the boat was powered by a split exhaust Graymarine 160hp 6cyl. engine. This photo was taken in the summer of 1949 by Charles C. Stuebgen .


"Arrow II", Believed to be on the North shore of the Allegheny River on the north side below Washington's Landing. We believe that this boat was built by the same builder as "Liberty The Second". There are many similar items on both boats including the tiller steering and various hardware items. Click here to compare! Our best guess is that this was taken around the same era as the Liberty which was 1922. This photograph was taken by Colonial Studio Sharpsburg, Pa.


On the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, a 1930s Dee Wite 22' Sedan Runabout. This boat was used by the Pittsburgh Police for patrolling the three rivers.


On the Ohio River just below the Dashelds Dam is a 1947 Chris Craft 22' Custom Sedan. This boat was owned by Warren Kuhlber. This photograph was taken in 1968 by Lois Snyder. Warren sold the boat in the early 1980s.


A Chris Craft Red & White express cruiser on the Allegheny River, near Oakmont. This photo was taken in the summer of 1949 by Charles C. Stuebgen .


Two Different Higgins Utilitys. Top Right and above, Al Bonchi 1947 Sport Speedster, top left a little newer (note the location of the bow light) Sport Speedster with the folding top. These photographs are from the early 1950s. Al & friends would take river trips, down the Ohio River to Toronto, Ohio & Wheeling, WV. The Newer boat is a boat seen along the way.

On the Monongahela River, A 1968 Photo fo a 1960 Century Coronado Powered by a 240 Ford Interceptor engine. This photo was taken just before a man named Pierie bought the boat. The people in the boat are unknown but the boat was later was sold to the Dilman family, then John Bell, and is presently owned by Chuck Miklos. The boat is in very bad condition and is in need of a complete restoration. An interesting note about this boat, This boat was built as a 1959 but it was restamped at the factory and sold as a 1960. It's original hull number was M59176 it's 1960 # was M6029. This boat was originally purchased May 1, 1960, by James G. Zaidan M.D. of Uniontown PA. He purchased the boat from Scott Motor Boat Sales of Point Marion, PA.


A 1937 view of men & their speed boats, getting ready for a boat race in Pittsburgh, PA. Many boats, engines & contestants are visible, not sure of the race class. The photo is dated Aug. 28, 1937.

On the Ohio River, back channel of Nevil Island, Lois & Jim Snyder's 1953 Century Resorter 18', "Penny-Pooh II". This photo was taken in the summer of 1968. The bridge in the distance is the old bridge from Neville Island to Coraopolis. This bridge was originally located at 6th Street in Pittsburgh. It was loaded on a barge and moved down river in the 1930s. The bridge was replaced with a flat deck bridge in the 1990s. The island that is visible in the distance, slowly disappared, and was completely gone by the mid 1980s.


On the Ohio River just a few miles downstream from Pittsburgh, a freshly rebuilt Century Resorter 16'. This boat was crashed into an old lock wall in 1958, when the boat had 6 hrs on the hull. Chapter member Chuck Miklos bought the boat from the insurance company and rebuilt the boat. He rebuilt the boat to be like a 1960 model. This photo was taken the summer of 1961.
